NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation, PE25-001, in January 2025 after complaints and field reports of engine failures in General Motors trucks and SUVs with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. In April 2025 General Motors recalled certain vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine (NHTSA recall 25V-274); NHTSA's recall file names the recalled parts as L87 connecting rods and crankshafts. NHTSA's later investigations of L87 engines, EA25-007, RQ26-001 and EA26-005, refer to recall 25V-274 in their summaries. This page puts the recall and those investigations together, each with the subject and status NHTSA's file gives it.

“The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure. Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.”

Counts are of the vehicle recalls and NHTSA investigations listed on this page, as NHTSA's files record them; each recall counts once, and makes and model years are those the listed recalls name. Counts aren't adjusted for sales, so they don't rank makers or models.

A vehicle that isn't listed here may still be in a recall. To see whether a specific vehicle has an open recall, enter its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

What this page doesn't tell you

  • This list is try.vin's: it lists a recall here only on the evidence shown beside it, and the list can be incomplete.
  • A model year listed here doesn't mean every vehicle of that year is included in a recall. Whether a specific vehicle is included, and whether it has been repaired, can only be checked by its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  • Each recall's potentially affected figure is the manufacturer's own estimate in NHTSA's record. Recalls can cover the same vehicles again, so this page doesn't add them up.
