A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle manufactured after 1981. You can find it on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's side door jamb, your vehicle registration, or insurance documents.

Full reports include title brands, accident and damage history, odometer readings, ownership history, service records, and manufacturer recall checks, where reported. The exact data available depends on what has been reported for each vehicle.

Full reports come from a commercial vehicle-history data provider; VIN decodes and recall campaigns come from NHTSA. Some incidents are never reported, so use the report as one part of your evaluation, alongside a pre-purchase inspection.

Any vehicle with a standard 17-character VIN (used since the 1981 model year): cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, buses, motorhomes, and trailers. Farm tractors and boats don't use 17-character VINs, so they can't be searched, and full history records can be sparse for trailers.

VIN decodes and recall campaigns come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Full vehicle history reports come from a commercial vehicle-history data provider that compiles title, accident, odometer, ownership, and service records reported to it.
