NHTSA Defect Investigations

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) looks into possible safety defects in vehicles and equipment. Below are the investigations NHTSA's investigations file shows as open, newest first, and those NHTSA closed in the last 365 days, each with its own page listing the vehicles, components and recalls NHTSA's file names and, where the file has one, the summary ODI wrote.

Audit Queries and Equipment Queries are administrative investigations: they look at whether companies complied with federal vehicle safety requirements, such as reporting, recall and certification rules, not at a possible vehicle defect.

An open investigation is not a finding that a safety defect exists, and NHTSA can close one without a recall. To see whether a specific vehicle has an open recall, enter its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
