NHTSA's summary

As NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation wrote it for Recall Query RQ26-003.

try.vin does not copy NHTSA's investigation documents; NHTSA's investigation record lists the ones NHTSA has published.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 118 complaints alleging detachment of the upper grille deflector on 2022-2024 model year (MY) GMC Sierra vehicles. 21 of these 118 complaints allege that the upper grille deflector detached after Recall 25V-060 was performed. The complaints allege that the upper grille deflector detaches while driving. In some cases, leading to a cracked windshield or surrounding vehicles needing to conduct evasive maneuvers. On February 6, 2025, GM submitted Recall 25V-060 addressing upper grille deflector detachment for 2022MY GMC Sierra vehicles manufactured with a chrome grille deflector. 2022MY GMC Sierra vehicles which were not manufactured with a chrome grille deflector and 2023-2024MY GMC Sierra vehicles were not included in the recall. ODI is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to assess the adequacy of the scope and remedy for Recall 25V-060. What an NHTSA investigation is

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) looks into possible safety defects in vehicles and equipment, often after owner complaints. An investigation usually starts as a Preliminary Evaluation, or as a Recall Query when it concerns whether an existing recall covers the right vehicles or fixes the problem, and ODI can upgrade it to a more detailed Engineering Analysis. A Defect Petition asks NHTSA to open an investigation, and Audit and Equipment Queries are administrative investigations into whether companies complied with federal vehicle safety requirements, such as reporting, recall and certification rules.

An open investigation is not a finding that a safety defect exists, and NHTSA can close one without a recall.
