2005 Toyota Tacoma mileage at failure
530 of the 707 complaints on file for the 2005 Toyota Tacoma give the vehicle's mileage when the problem happened.
| Component | Median | Middle half | Based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structure | Median 115,000 miles | Middle half 60,000–155,000 miles | Based on 209 complaints |
| Suspension | Median 100,000 miles | Middle half 65,000–145,000 miles | Based on 79 complaints |

| Air Bags | Median 80,000 miles | Middle half 60,000–110,000 miles | Based on 38 complaints |
A component's median is its 50th percentile, and its middle half runs from its 25th to its 75th percentile.
Owners give the mileage themselves, often as a round number, and NHTSA doesn't check it. A complaint that names several components counts under each one, and mileages that can't be right, such as 999,999, or 50 miles on a five-year-old car, are left out.
These figures describe the complaints owners filed. They don't predict when a particular vehicle will have a problem, and vehicles that never had one aren't counted.
Most complaints NHTSA received since May 17, 2021 give no mileage. So that they aren't undercounted, each one received since then that gives a mileage also stands in for those that gave none, which can put a component's median above most of the mileages it is based on.

Leaf Spring may Fracture and Puncture Tank
NHTSA #14V604000 · Suspension — Rear — Springs — Leaf Spring Assembly — Leaf · NHTSA notice
Reported September 29, 2014 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
Potentially affected: 710,711 vehicles
Repair completion: 47.6% (latest rate the manufacturer reported to NHTSA; dataset updated November 3, 2026)
Owners notified January 29, 2016 · Vehicles built September 14, 2009 – December 6, 2010 (per NHTSA)
Defect description
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner and 4x4 vehicles manufactured September 14, 2009, to October 11, 2010. In the affected vehicles, one of the leaf springs may fracture due to stress or corrosion. While being driven, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components including the fuel tank, possibly puncturing the tank and causing a fuel leak.
Safety consequence
If the fuel tank leaks fuel from being punctured, there is an increased risk of a fire.
Manufacturer remedy
Toyota will notify owners and dealers will install new rear leaf spring assemblies. The recall began on January 29, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Seat Belt Screws May Loosen
NHTSA #13V337000 · Seat Belts · NHTSA notice
Reported August 7, 2013 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
Potentially affected: 342,451 vehicles
Repair completion: 49.74% (latest rate the manufacturer reported to NHTSA; dataset updated November 3, 2026)
Owners notified February 24, 2014 · Vehicles built September 14, 2004 – March 29, 2010 (per NHTSA)
Defect description
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured September 14, 2004, through March 29, 2010; and model year 2011 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured July 1, 2010, through September 7, 2011. If the access doors are repeatedly and forcefully closed, the screws that attach the seat belt pre-tensioner to the seat belt retractor can loosen over time. If the screws loosen completely, the seat belt pre-tensioner and the retractor spring cover could detach from the seat belt retractor.
Safety consequence
If the seat belt pre-tensioner detaches from the seat belt assembly, the seat belt pre-tensioner will not perform as designed, increasing the risk of injury in a severe crash.
Manufacturer remedy
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat belt assemblies. Based on the inspection, the seat belt assembly will be replaced or new pre-tensioner screws will be installed with thread-locking sealant and a retractor spring cover with stopper ribs to prevent loosening of the screws. These services will be provided at no cost to the owner. The recall began during February 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
