2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee mileage at failure

1,351 of the 2,052 complaints on file for the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee give the vehicle's mileage when the problem happened.

Mileage at failure by component, from owners' complaints to NHTSA
Electrical SystemMedian 95,000 milesMiddle half 60,000–130,000 milesBased on 468 complaints
StructureMedian 75,000 milesMiddle half 55,000–100,000 milesBased on 316 complaints
Power TrainMedian 70,000 milesMiddle half 17,000–110,000 milesBased on 207 complaints
EngineMedian 80,000 milesMiddle half 45,000–115,000 milesBased on 173 complaints
Latches/Locks/LinkagesMedian 60,000 milesMiddle half 40,000–80,000 milesBased on 137 complaints

A component's median is its 50th percentile, and its middle half runs from its 25th to its 75th percentile.

Owners give the mileage themselves, often as a round number, and NHTSA doesn't check it. A complaint that names several components counts under each one, and mileages that can't be right, such as 999,999, or 50 miles on a five-year-old car, are left out.

These figures describe the complaints owners filed. They don't predict when a particular vehicle will have a problem, and vehicles that never had one aren't counted.

Most complaints NHTSA received since May 17, 2021 give no mileage. So that they aren't undercounted, each one received since then that gives a mileage also stands in for those that gave none, which can put a component's median above most of the mileages it is based on.

Mileage from NHTSA's complaints file of October 31, 2026. How these figures are worked out

NHTSA defect investigations

NHTSA's investigations file lists the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee in 1 investigation. A listed model year means only that an investigation names it; it says nothing about any particular vehicle. An open investigation is not a finding that a safety defect exists, and NHTSA can close one without a recall.

Knee Contact may Turn Ignition Switch Off

NHTSA #14V438000 · Electrical System — Ignition — Switch · NHTSA notice

Reported July 21, 2014 · Chrysler Group LLC

Potentially affected: 649,353 vehicles

Repair completion: 49.59% (latest rate the manufacturer reported to NHTSA; dataset updated November 3, 2026)

Manufacturer campaign P41 · Owners notified October 9, 2015 · Vehicles built February 11, 2004 – July 5, 2007 (per NHTSA) · Recall influenced by NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation

Defect description

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Safety consequence

If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Manufacturer remedy

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.

Safety consequence

If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.

Manufacturer remedy

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.
