I bought the 2005 Odyssey van in 12/2015. It now has 192,426 miles on it. Three or four times every year since I bought it, the engine will suddenly surge when coming to a stop sign or light, with my right foot on the brake pedal, braking and slowing the van for the stop sign or light. The engine…

2005 Honda Odyssey mileage at failure
670 of the 829 complaints on file for the 2005 Honda Odyssey give the vehicle's mileage when the problem happened.
| Component | Median | Middle half | Based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | Median 85,000 miles | Middle half 60,000–110,000 miles | Based on 132 complaints |
| Structure | Median 85,000 miles | Middle half 50,000–130,000 miles | Based on 109 complaints |
| Power Train | Median 85,000 miles | Middle half 65,000–110,000 miles | Based on 96 complaints |
| Steering | Median 50,000 miles | Middle half 35,000–85,000 miles | Based on 80 complaints |
| Air Bags | Median 110,000 miles | Middle half 85,000–135,000 miles | Based on 70 complaints |
| Service Brakes | Median 25,000 miles | Middle half 8,000–55,000 miles | Based on 60 complaints |
A component's median is its 50th percentile, and its middle half runs from its 25th to its 75th percentile.
Owners give the mileage themselves, often as a round number, and NHTSA doesn't check it. A complaint that names several components counts under each one, and mileages that can't be right, such as 999,999, or 50 miles on a five-year-old car, are left out.
These figures describe the complaints owners filed. They don't predict when a particular vehicle will have a problem, and vehicles that never had one aren't counted.

NHTSA defect investigations
NHTSA's investigations file lists the 2005 Honda Odyssey in 3 investigations. Audit Queries and Equipment Queries are administrative investigations: they look at whether companies complied with federal vehicle safety requirements, such as reporting, recall and certification rules, not at a possible vehicle defect. A listed model year means only that an investigation names it; it says nothing about any particular vehicle. An open investigation is not a finding that a safety defect exists, and NHTSA can close one without a recall.

Defect description
HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2007 ODYSSEY AND ACURA RL VEHICLES. BRAKE FLUID CONTAINING POLYMERS IS USED THAT ACTS AS A LUBRICANT FOR CERTAIN BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS. IF THIS OCCURS, A SMALL AMOUNT OF BRAKE FLUID COULD SLOWLY LEAK FROM THE SEAL INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER.
Safety consequence
A LEAK OF BRAKE FLUID COULD LEAD TO A CHANGE IN BRAKE PEDAL FEEL AND OVERTIME A DEGRADATION IN BRAKING PERFORMANCE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Manufacturer remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER SEAL FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING DECEMBER 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.
