2008 Jeep Liberty mileage at failure
441 of the 541 complaints on file for the 2008 Jeep Liberty give the vehicle's mileage when the problem happened.
| Component | Median | Middle half | Based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel/Propulsion System | Median 45,000 miles | Middle half 30,000–65,000 miles | Based on 131 complaints |
| Electrical System | Median 90,000 miles | Middle half 60,000–115,000 miles | Based on 106 complaints |
| Visibility/Wiper | Median 60,000 miles | Middle half 45,000–90,000 miles | Based on 70 complaints |
| Structure | Median 60,000 miles | Middle half 40,000–80,000 miles | Based on 65 complaints |
A component's median is its 50th percentile, and its middle half runs from its 25th to its 75th percentile.
Owners give the mileage themselves, often as a round number, and NHTSA doesn't check it. A complaint that names several components counts under each one, and mileages that can't be right, such as 999,999, or 50 miles on a five-year-old car, are left out.
These figures describe the complaints owners filed. They don't predict when a particular vehicle will have a problem, and vehicles that never had one aren't counted.

NHTSA defect investigations
NHTSA's investigations file lists the 2008 Jeep Liberty in 1 investigation. A listed model year means only that an investigation names it; it says nothing about any particular vehicle. An open investigation is not a finding that a safety defect exists, and NHTSA can close one without a recall.

Drive Shaft Failure may cause Airbag Deployment
NHTSA #13V121000 · Power Train — Driveline — Driveshaft · NHTSA notice
Reported April 3, 2013 · Chrysler Group LLC
Potentially affected: 62,578 vehicles
Manufacturer campaign N10 · Owners notified June 27, 2013 · Vehicles built February 15, 2007 – March 1, 2008 (per NHTSA)
Defect description
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Dodge Nitro 4X2 vehicles manufactured March 21, 2006, through March 1, 2008; and 2008 Jeep Liberty 4X2 vehicles manufactured February 15, 2007, through March 1, 2008. The transfer case heat shield may drop down and rub on the drive shaft, weakening it and potentially causing the drive shaft to break.
Safety consequence
If the drive shaft breaks, a section of it can strike the transfer case tunnel with enough force that the airbag computer will believe the vehicle is in a crash and thus deploy the airbags. Additionally, the drive shaft failure will result in a loss of motive power. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.
Manufacturer remedy
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will add a bracket to support the rear of the heat shield, free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on May 29, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N10.
