What you get
What a motorcycle history report shows
Used motorcycles move fast on the private-sale market, and unlike cars they are rarely inspected by a third party before money changes hands. A motorcycle VIN check and history report help you confirm the bike has not been wrecked or written off as salvage before you commit, and NICB's free VINCheck adds a theft lookup. try.vin works with cruiser, sport, touring, and dual-sport bikes from Harley-Davidson, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, BMW, Ducati, Triumph, and more.
Title brands & ownership history
Title brands reported for the vehicle — salvage, rebuilt, junk, flood, fire, or lemon — plus the number of previous owners.
Accident & damage events
Reported collisions, airbag deployments, structural damage, and total-loss events, with severity where available.
Odometer readings
Reported mileage readings from inspections, service records, and auctions, plus odometer-problem checks such as “not actual miles” brands.
Safety recalls
NHTSA recall campaigns for the model year, with the defect and the manufacturer remedy — free with the VIN decode.
Service records
Reported maintenance and repair visits, where available.
Decoded specs
Make, model, year, engine, and country of assembly, decoded from the VIN by NHTSA — free.
Where is the VIN on a motorcycle?
On a motorcycle, the 17-character VIN is typically stamped into the right side of the steering neck, just behind the front forks. You will also see it on the motorcycle title, registration, and insurance card, and it should match the engine and frame number if the bike has been inspected. If any of these numbers look restamped or ground down, walk away.
