Boats use a Hull Identification Number (HIN) instead of the automotive VIN, but the principle is the same: a 12-character code that identifies the manufacturer, model year, and serial. Where is the VIN on a boat?
Every U.S.-built boat from 1972 onward carries the 12-character HIN stamped into the starboard (right-side) outer transom, just above the waterline. You will also find it on the title, registration, insurance card, and manufacturer certification sticker. A boat with a missing or recut HIN is almost certainly stolen or rebuilt — do not buy it.
