Passenger cars are the most common vehicles on U.S. roads — sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, wagons, and convertibles all share the same 17-character VIN format. A car VIN check is the single best way to uncover prior accidents, title brands, odometer rollbacks, and open recalls before you hand over a deposit on a used sedan or coupe.
Where is the VIN on a car?
On a passenger car, the VIN is stamped into a metal plate visible through the lower driver-side corner of the windshield. You will also find it on a sticker inside the driver-side door jamb, on the vehicle title and registration, on your insurance ID card, and on dealer service invoices. Cars manufactured after 1981 follow the 17-character standard and never contain the letters I, O, or Q.
