Recall group: Takata airbag inflators

Defect description

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2007-2009 Freightliner and Dodge Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled into the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

Safety consequence

An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Manufacturer remedy

DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger side frontal air bag, free of charge. The recall began on September 29, 2017. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. Note: This recall fully supersedes recall 15V-354 and partially supersedes recalls 16V-379 and 17V-025.

Defect description

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (Daimler Vans) is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Dodge Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles manufactured July 1, 2006, to July 31, 2008, 2007-2014 Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles manufactured July 1, 2006, to July 1, 2014, and 2010-2014 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles manufactured July 1, 2010, to July 1, 2014. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.

Safety consequence

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

Manufacturer remedy

Daimler Vans will notify the Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner owners and Fiat Chrysler will notify the Dodge owners. The respective dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began March 31, 2017. Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner owners may contact Daimler Van's customer service at 1-877-762-8267. Dodge owners may contact Fiat Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

Defect description

Cummings Mobility Conversion & Supply (Cummings) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Ford E-150, E-250, E-350, Chevrolet Express, 2006-2008 Dodge Sprinter, and 2009-2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and 2013 Ford Transit Connect vehicles manufactured January 1, 2006, to October 8, 2014, equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured by Ricon Corporation after January 1, 2006. The platform side plate of the affected wheelchair lifts may crack.

Safety consequence

If the platform side plates crack, the lift platform can separate from the lift and come to rest against the vehicle's lift door. When the doors are opened, the platform may fall out, increasing the risk of injury to the lift operator.

Manufacturer remedy

Cummings will notify owners to take buses to a Ricon dealer or service center who will install supplemental platform support bumpers. Any platform that has already started cracking will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began January 13, 2015. Owners may contact Cumming's customer service at 1-800-639-5438 or Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884. Cumming's number for this recall is 14E-041.

SPRINTER WILL RECALL 6 MY 2007 DODGE 3500 AND FREIGHTLINER 3500 VEHICLES. THE THREADED BUSH OF THE BRAKE ADJUSTMENT OF THE PARKING BRAKE MAY BREAK. THE THREADED BUSH TOGETHER WITH THE ADJUSTMENT SCREW MAY DETACH FROM ITS BRACKET.

Safety consequence

IF THIS OCCURRED, THE PARKING BRAKE FUNCTION MAY BE LOST. THIS COULD ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO MOVE INADVERTENTLY AND CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.

Manufacturer remedy

Defect description

ON CERTAIN UTILITY VANS, THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR IN CERTAIN DIESEL ENGINES COULD FAIL DUE TO SEPARATION OF BOND WIRES FROM THE LEAD FRAME IN THE SENSOR. THIS RESULTS IN AN INTERRUPTION IN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION IN THE CHIP HOUSING OF THE SENSOR.

Safety consequence

WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE VEHICLES MAY LOSE POWER RATHER THAN ENTER A LIMP-HOME MODE. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE RESTARTED AFTER FAILURE OF THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION IN THE SENSOR, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, THE SCREW BOLTS OF THE FUEL TANK FASTENING STRAPS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TIGHTENED CORRECTLY. AFTER NORMAL PRODUCTION PROCESS, THE VEHICLES ARE DISASSEMBED FOR SHIPMENT TO THE US AND THE BOLTS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN CORRECTLY TIGHTENED WHEN RE-ASSEMBLED.

Safety consequence

THE FUEL TANK CAN LOOSEN AND LEAK FUEL. FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.

Manufacturer remedy

The contact owns 2008 Winnebago View RV built on a 2007 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Chassis. The contact stated that the key fob failed to open the doors of the recreational vehicle. The contact stated that he attempted to replace the batteries however, the failure continued. The contact went to an unknown Dodge dealer who informed him that he would need to go to a Mercedes- Benz dealer for a key fob code. The contact stated that he was informed that the codes were located and Mercedes-Benz in Europe; and the USA dealers were unable to get the codes. The contact stated that the key fob needed a software update and code to work. The manufacturer Mercedes-Benz complaint department was contacted and a case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

I WAS ABLE TO PULL RV OVER AND LET IT REST. AFTER 2 HOURS OF BEING ON SIDE OF HIGHWAY, I WAS ABLE TO GET RV STARTED AND BACK ON THE ROAD. I FIXED THE REAR SPEED SENSORS AND TRIED DRIVING RV AGAIN. SAME ISSUE. I WAS ON INTERSTATE 17 WHEN THE 3 LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AND THE RV STALLED COMPLETELY. I HAD NO POWERING STEERING AND STRUGGLED TO SAFELY PULL OVER. RV WILL BE TAKEN BACK TO MERCEDES AND TRY TO TROUBLESHOOT. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL AND MERCEDES NEEDS TO FIX THE ISSUE AS I SEE ON FORUMS THAT A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. LUCKILY, I HAVE NOT HEARD OF ANY INJURIES BUT IF THIS ISSUE HAPPENS TO AN INEXPERIENCED DRIVER, THEY MIGHT PANIC AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.

THE SHIFTING PROBLEM IS WHY IT WAS ORIGINALLY TOWED IN. I AM FEELING THAT THE FOCUS OF MY CONCERNS WERE UNADDRESSED INITIALLY BY THE SERVICE DEPT. I SPOKE WITH THE PREVIOUS OWNER AND WAS TOLD THE BATTERY WAS NOT EVEN THREE YRS OLD, YET NICK SAID THAT THE BATTERY THEY TOOK OUT WAS NO LONGER THERE, THAT TWO DAYS AFTER IT WAS TAKEN OUT, IT WAS PICKED UP TO BE RECYCLED. WAS THE BATTERY STILL UNDER WARRANTY? WAS THE BRAKE SWITCH REPLACEMENT NECESSARY, SINCE IT DID NOT TAKE CARE OF THE SHIFTING PROBLEM AFTER THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN REPLACED IT? I WAS TOLD BY A MECHANIC TO MAKE A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA AS THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM HE ENCOUNTERED WITH THE DODGE SPRINTER 3500. I NEED TO MEET WITH YOUR K AND M MANAGEMENT TEAM TO ADDRESS MY CONCERNS.

FOR THE SECOND TIME SINCE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, THE TUBE CONNECTED TO THE EGR VALVE SPLIT APART. THE TUBE IS LOCATED DIRECTLY UNDER THE CAB AIR INTAKE, SO EXHAUST GASSES ARE PUMPED INTO THE CAB. WE WERE FORTUNATE THAT THE TUBE BROKE COMPLETELY APART AND THE PRESENCE OF EXHAUST WAS OBVIOUS. SINCE THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN 85K MILES, I AM CONCERNED THE NEXT TIME IT MIGHT JUST CRACK AND CAUSE CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 10 AT 65 MPH. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN, THE TUBE RUPTURED BECAUSE THE EGR VALVE STUCK CLOSED, CAUSING PRESSURE TO BUILD UP IN THE TUBE. I HAVE ALL THE PARTS THAT WERE REPLACED AND CAN SHIP THEM TO YOU IF NECESSARY.
