My 2022 Tiguan experienced a complete failure of the infotainment display after an over-the-air software update, including loss of the rearview camera display when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. After the OTA update, the infotainment screen became non-functional and will not turn on. The rearview camera no longer displays when reversing. The front phone charging ports and wireless charging tray located below the infotainment system are also non-functional. There were no warning lights prior to the system failure. When attempting a 15 or 30-second reset using the power button, the screen would appear to begin rebooting because the backlight turned on, and the phone charger briefly began working again. However, the reboot fails and screen returns to dark. Volkswagen phone support originally told me that this VIN falls within an impacted range for a known issue. However, the dealership stated that the failure is due to a faulty 5F infotainment control module / chip and quoted approximately $2,500 for the repair as my vehicle was one-month out of warranty. The dealership also stated that the part is on backorder with no known ETA because of the current volume of similar reports. The failure disables the rearview camera display, which creates a safety issue when backing up. Whether the VW vehicles with this 5F infotainment module are experiencing a defect that can disable the rearview camera and related electronic functions due to a faulty 5F chip or a faulty firmware/software update, Volkswagen should be required to issue a safety recall and provide repairs at no cost to the customer given the clearly widespread nature of the defect.

The contact also stated that the vehicle experienced excessive oil consumption, requiring the oil to be changed every 2,000 miles. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where an oil consumption test was performed. The dealer informed the contact that no issues were found within the parameters of the test. The vehicle was not diagnosed for the rearview camera failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure via telephone, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 55,000.

I am reporting a serious engine defect on my 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan at approximately 39,500 miles. The vehicle has excessive oil consumption and an oil leak. The authorized dealer diagnosed the problem as requiring full cylinder head replacement. This is a major engine repair at low mileage. I previously told the dealer the vehicle needed oil added between changes. The issue has worsened and now requires a cylinder head. I escalated with dealership management and Volkswagen Customer Care. Volkswagen refuses full coverage and offers only partial goodwill, leaving me to pay a large portion out of pocket despite the low mileage. This issue is widespread on 2022–2023 Tiguan models with the 2.0 TSI EA888 engine. Multiple owners report the same oil consumption and cylinder head replacement. Consumer Reports has documented cylinder head and oil consumption complaints on the 2022 Tiguan. Class action lawsuits allege a defect causing excessive oil consumption. The Canadian Automobile Protection Association has also reported premature valve guide wear leading to cylinder head replacement on 2018–2024 Tiguans. Excessive oil consumption creates a safety risk. Low oil can cause engine damage, stalling, or complete engine failure while driving. A vehicle needing frequent oil top-offs and a major internal repair under 40,000 miles indicates a possible manufacturing defect that Volkswagen has not addressed with a recall. I have also experienced issues with the forward collision warning system, the PCV valve, the infotainment system, and brake vibration when braking. These secondary problems further show reliability concerns, but the cylinder head failure is the most serious and safety-related issue. I request that NHTSA review this complaint with other similar reports and investigate whether a safety-related defect exists in the 2022–2023 Volkswagen Tiguan that requires further action or a recall. My 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan repeatedly displays the warning: “Travel Assist Currently Not Available.” When this occurs, the vehicle beeps every few seconds, which is extremely distracting while driving. I have also noticed that when the Travel Assist failure occurs, there is a pulsating feedback/vibration when braking. This condition continues until the “Travel Assist Currently Not Available” warning is resolved. Since I purchased the vehicle (purchased brand new in 2022), this issue has occurred every year. Volkswagen has previously had to replace the steering wheel each time the issue occurred (2 swaps performed in the last two years). The issue is now occurring again for the a third consecutive year, indicating that the underlying problem has not been permanently resolved. I am concerned that this is a recurring safety-related defect that Volkswagen has not adequately addressed. The repeated warning, constant beeping, and unusual braking feedback are distracting and unsafe while operating the vehicle. Volkswagen should identify and permanently correct the underlying cause rather than continuing to replace the steering wheel as a temporary solution. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this recurring issue and determine whether a broader safety defect exists with the Travel Assist system in Volkswagen vehicles. I have only ever serviced this vehicle at VW dealerships, and took the car in for service every 10k miles. The check engine light came on just under 50k miles and it was due to a cracked Leak Detection Pump. I paid for the repair out of pocket. After it was fixed, just a few weeks later the check engine light came back on. When I took the car back to the same dealership, they diagnosed the problem as a cylinder head issue requiring cylinder head replacement and quoted a significant cost to fix. It is not covered under warranty even though I am just barely over the 50k mile mark. There is a common and known, recurring issue with the engine on the 2022 VW Tiguans and it is a shame that there is no recall already issued for this.

My 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan intermittently displays the warning “Travel Assist Currently Not Available” while driving. The warning is accompanied by an audible chime and has occurred repeatedly. The warning indicates that the vehicle’s Travel Assist system is unavailable. I am concerned because Travel Assist is associated with steering and lane-keeping assistance, and the warning occurs while the vehicle is being driven. Volkswagen has issued Technical Service Bulletin 48-23-01 (Transaction No. 2070207) addressing a “Travel Assist currently not available” condition involving the steering wheel hands-on detection system on certain Tiguan vehicles. The problem is intermittent and the vehicle is available for inspection. I am reporting this because the condition continues to occur and I believe it should be documented and evaluated as a potential safety-related defect.

2022 VW Tiguan, VIN [XXX], 54,953 mi. Infotainment screen went black; because the rearview camera image displays only on that screen, the backup camera is completely inoperative in reverse. Failure is constant. I replaced a blown #20 fuse and attempted a hard restart with no result. XXX, Volkswagen of [XXX] [XXX]: tech found DTC in ECM stating no communication with 5F module (infotainment control unit); VW guided test plan directs replacement of the 5F module. Quoted 501.54. Dealer stated this is a known issue and multiple customers there are waiting on the same backordered part. VW has already recalled 2022 Tiguans for this component and this consequence. Campaign 22V-514 ([XXX]): infotainment memory module defect causing rearview camera image not to display, certified by VW as an FMVSS 111 noncompliance. Campaign 25V-082: 2022-24 Tiguan camera control unit error, same loss of camera display. NHTSA VIN lookup on XXX shows no open recalls; my vehicle was included in neither campaign and no remedy has ever been applied. My vehicle has the identical failure (same model year, platform, component, and loss of rear visibility) as the recalled population. The dealer's statement that multiple customers await the same part indicates the defect population extends beyond the recalled VINs. I request NHTSA evaluate whether the scope of 22V-514 and 25V-082 was underinclusive and whether a recall query or scope expansion is warranted for uncovered 2022 Tiguans.
