2008 Suzuki SX4 mileage at failure

75 of the 101 complaints on file for the 2008 Suzuki SX4 give the vehicle's mileage when the problem happened.

Mileage at failure by component, from owners' complaints to NHTSA
Air BagsMedian 50,000 milesMiddle half 35,000–65,000 milesBased on 56 complaints

A component's median is its 50th percentile, and its middle half runs from its 25th to its 75th percentile.

Owners give the mileage themselves, often as a round number, and NHTSA doesn't check it. A complaint that names several components counts under each one, and mileages that can't be right, such as 999,999, or 50 miles on a five-year-old car, are left out.

These figures describe the complaints owners filed. They don't predict when a particular vehicle will have a problem, and vehicles that never had one aren't counted.

NHTSA defect investigations

NHTSA's investigations file lists the 2008 Suzuki SX4 in 1 investigation. A listed model year means only that an investigation names it; it says nothing about any particular vehicle. An open investigation is not a finding that a safety defect exists, and NHTSA can close one without a recall.

Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor mat

NHTSA #13V405000 · Air Bags · NHTSA notice

Reported September 6, 2013 · Suzuki Motor of America, Inc.

Potentially affected: 189,901 vehicles

Repair completion: 32.57% (latest rate the manufacturer reported to NHTSA; dataset updated November 3, 2026)

Suzuki campaign VD · Owners notified May 23, 2014 · Vehicles built June 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008 (per NHTSA) · Recall influenced by NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation

Defect description

Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, over time, the OCS sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat may fail due to repeated flexing of the mat from use of the seat. As a result, during a crash necessitating deployment, the air bag will deploy regardless of whether the front seat occupant is an adult or a child.

Safety consequence

Air bag deployment with a child in the front passenger side seat increases the risk of injury to that child.

Manufacturer remedy

Suzuki will notify owners and dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion assembly (which includes the OCS sensor mat) free of charge. Sufficient quantities of parts are not currently available to fix all of the affected vehicles. Owners will be notified of the recall in October 2013 and will receive a second notification when parts are available to have their vehicle repaired. The recall began on May 23, 2014. Owners may contact Suzuki at 1-800-934-0934. Suzuki's recall campaign number is VD.

Notes

Note: Vehicles which previously had a countermeasure occupant classification system (OCS) sensor mat installed under the special coverage campaign conducted by Suzuki distributors in the United States are not affected by this recall.Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
