NHTSA's summary
As NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation wrote it for Equipment Query EQ17-002.
June 5, 2017, Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) notified NHTSA of a safety-related defect in certain 2017 Jay Flight Bungalow, Hummingbird, White Hawk, Jay Flight SLX, Jay Feather 7, Jay Feather and Jay Flight fifth wheel recreational trailers. A recall, 17V-290 was filed. According to the Report, the trailers are equipped with LED ceiling lights that produce extreme high temperature during normal use which may cause light failure. Some of the failure characteristics noted are melting of the plastic housing, smoldering, and charred and scorched ceiling panels. The excessive heat from the LED ceiling lights may increase the risk of a fire.
Jayco identified Command Electronics, Inc. (Command) as the supplier of the ceiling lights. Command has indicated that it supplied the same component to other manufacturers, but has not yet filed a defect information report in accordance with 49 C.F.R. ?573.3(f).
RMD opened EQ investigation in 07/21/2017 to obtain information regarding the additional manufacturers that were supplied with the component identified by Jayco, and to determine whether additional safety recalls are required by any of those identified companies.
Two years past, RMD found not enough evidences that the same LED ceiling lights would produce extreme high temperature during normal use from other users beside Jayco, Inc. RMD is satisfied with findings. Accordingly, this EQ is closed.

What an NHTSA investigation is
NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) looks into possible safety defects in vehicles and equipment, often after owner complaints. An investigation usually starts as a Preliminary Evaluation, or as a Recall Query when it concerns whether an existing recall covers the right vehicles or fixes the problem, and ODI can upgrade it to a more detailed Engineering Analysis. A Defect Petition asks NHTSA to open an investigation, and Audit and Equipment Queries are administrative investigations into whether companies complied with federal vehicle safety requirements, such as reporting, recall and certification rules.
An open investigation is not a finding that a safety defect exists, and NHTSA can close one without a recall.
