Rivet Failure may Cause RAD to Detach

Defect description

Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company (Utility) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Flatbed trailers, model FS2CHA, manufactured January 1, 2015, to September 16, 2016, equipped with certain Conestoga XP sliding trailer tarping systems with RAD-style rear closures. In the affected trailers, the rear aerodynamic device (RAD) may separate from the rear of the tarping system, due to rivet failure.

Safety consequence

If the RAD detaches from the trailer it may be a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Manufacturer remedy

Utility will notify owners, and dealers will replace the mounting rivets with a bolted connection, free of charge. The recall began on September 20, 2016. Owners may contact Utility customer service at 1-818-965-1541.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE CONTACT CALLED HARBOR FREIGHT (3100 HIGHWAY 80 E, PEARL, MS 39208) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
