Manufacturers filed 201 vehicle recalls with NHTSA in the third quarter of 2026 (July to September), with a combined 9,001,952 vehicles potentially affected, by the manufacturers' own counts.
These figures are frozen, counted from NHTSA's recall file as of October 30, 2026.
Each vehicle recall counts once, in the quarter NHTSA received the manufacturer's recall report, starting with 2014. Recalls of every kind of vehicle count, from cars to RVs, buses and trailers; recalls of equipment, tires and child seats don't, so NHTSA's own yearly totals of all recalls are higher. Counts aren't adjusted for sales or for how many models a company makes, so they don't rank vehicles or companies by safety.

Vehicles potentially affected is the number of vehicles each manufacturer told NHTSA its recall could cover, added up over the recalls, so a vehicle covered by two recalls counts twice.
Do-not-drive and park-outside recalls are the recalls NHTSA's file flags with those consumer advisories; a recall flagged with both counts in both columns. NHTSA's file flags very few recalls park outside before 2020, so park-outside counts compare only from 2020. See the do-not-drive and park-outside list.
Electric or hybrid propulsion recalls are recalls NHTSA files under an electric or hybrid propulsion component, such as a traction battery or an inverter. It isn't NHTSA's own count of electric-vehicle recalls.
A quarter's figures are frozen at the first daily update from an NHTSA file dated at least 30 days after the quarter ended, and try.vin doesn't revise them afterwards except to correct its own mistake. A recall NHTSA later moves to another quarter stays counted in the quarter it was frozen in. Preliminary figures can still change.
Companies with the most vehicle recalls
Each recall counts under the company that filed it with NHTSA. Spellings of a company's name that differ only in punctuation or legal form count together, as do the earlier names and other spellings try.vin has matched, such as Kia Motors America under Kia America; separate companies count separately, even under one owner. Counts aren't adjusted for sales, so they don't rank companies by safety.
Companies include every kind of vehicle maker, from carmakers to RV, truck, bus and trailer makers. A brand counts under the company that files its recalls, such as Lincoln under Ford Motor Company. Counts that include equipment recalls, like many news reports, are higher for some companies.
