NHTSA's summary

As NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation wrote it for Defect Petition DP15-003.

On June 14, 2014, a consumer petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to open a defect investigation into separation of convertible top back glass in model year 2005 Crossfire Roadster vehicles.

In assessing the petitioner's request, NHTSA reviewed information from the petitioner, information from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US, LLC, relevant reports in the NHTSA complaint database received from June 23, 2008 through July 8, 2015, and interviews with complainants.

NHTSA's review indicates that separation of the back glass occurs gradually and the glass remains intact and inside the top after the failure. Considering agency priorities and agency resources, and the likelihood that further investigation would not result in a defect finding, NHTSA has concluded that further investigation of petitioner's concerns is not warranted.

The agency has denied the petition.

The official petition denial, as published in the Federal Register, is available in the document file for this petition.

What an NHTSA investigation is

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) looks into possible safety defects in vehicles and equipment, often after owner complaints. An investigation usually starts as a Preliminary Evaluation, or as a Recall Query when it concerns whether an existing recall covers the right vehicles or fixes the problem, and ODI can upgrade it to a more detailed Engineering Analysis. A Defect Petition asks NHTSA to open an investigation, and Audit and Equipment Queries are administrative investigations into whether companies complied with federal vehicle safety requirements, such as reporting, recall and certification rules.

An open investigation is not a finding that a safety defect exists, and NHTSA can close one without a recall.

To see whether a specific vehicle has an open recall, enter its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
