Insufficient Air Brake Supply Volume/FMVSS 121

Defect description

Entegra Coach (Entegra) is recalling certain 2015-2019 Aspire and Insignia motorhomes. The service and supply reservoirs have an insufficient volume of air for the brake system. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, "Air Brake Systems."

Safety consequence

The undersized air brake supply reservoir may provide an insufficient air supply to properly operate the brakes during repetitive braking, reducing braking performance and increasing the risk of a crash.

Manufacturer remedy

Dealers will replace the air reservoir, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 21, 2022. Owners may contact Entegra customer service at 1-800-283-8267.

Defect description

Entegra Coach (Entegra) is recalling certain 2011-2012 and 2015-2016 Aspire built on Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) chassis. The power steering hose on the affected vehicles may be routed incorrectly, and, as a result, the hose may rub against the power stud on the starter motor, possibly causing electrical arcing and a power steering fluid leak.

Safety consequence

Electrical arcing in the presence of leaking power steering fluid can increase the risk of a fire.

Manufacturer remedy

Entegra will notify owners, and Freightliner dealers will reroute the power steering hose to provide proper clearance, free of charge. The recall began on May 1, 2018. Owners may contact Entegra customer service at 1-800-517-9137.

Defect description

Entegra Coach (Entegra) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Aspire and 2017-2018 Insignia motorhomes built on a Spartan chassis. The air brake supply reservoir is less than 12x the combined volume of air for all service brake chambers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."

Safety consequence

The undersized air brake supply reservoir may provide an insufficient air supply to properly operate the brakes during repetitive brake applications, reducing braking performance and increasing the risk of a crash.

Manufacturer remedy

Entegra will notify owners, and Spartan service centers will replace the current air supply reservoir with one that has twice the capacity, free of charge. The recall began on February 16, 2018. Owners may contact Spartan Chassis at 1-800-543-4277 or Entegra customer service at 1-800-517-9137.

Defect description

Entegra Coach (Entegra) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Aspire, Anthem, Cornerstone, and Insignia motorhomes. The vehicles have lights that do not include reflectors and the vehicle does not have separate reflectors. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Safety consequence

Without the required reflectors, the motorhome may be less visible to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

Manufacturer remedy

Entegra will notify owners, and dealers will install compliant reflectors, free of charge. The recall began on January 2, 2018. Owners may contact Entegra customer service at 1-800-945-4787. Entegra's number for this recall is 9903363.

Engine Brake may not Activate

Defect description

Entegra Coach (Entegra) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Aspire and Aspire TK motorhomes manufactured July 14, 2014, to January 15, 2016. The throttle pedal position sensor on the affected vehicles may not return to zero, causing the engine brake to suddenly not activate as expected, reducing the vehicle's deceleration ability.

Safety consequence

A sudden loss of an engine brake without warning on a motorhome may lead to a reduced brake capacity potentially increasing the risk of a crash.

Manufacturer remedy

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), manufacturer of the motorhome chassis, has notified owners, and DTNA dealers will replace the throttle pedal, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2016. Trailer Brakes may Stay Activated

Defect description

Entegra Coach (Entegra) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Aspire vehicles manufactured July 14, 2014, to January 15, 2016 and built on Daimler Trucks North America motorhome chassis. On these vehicles, equipped with a heavier, adjustable foot pedal, the brake activation signal to certain towed devices may not deactivate when the motorhome service brakes are released.

Safety consequence

If the brake activation signal to a towed device remains active when the motorhome chassis service brakes are released, the brakes on a towed device may remain engaged depending on brake configuration of the trailer. Additionally, following drivers may be confused by the motorhome's actions, increasing the risk of a crash.

Manufacturer remedy

Daimler Trucks will notify owners, and their dealers will modify the affected brake assemblies, free of charge. The recall began on June 6, 2016 . Owners may contact Entegra customer service at 1-800-945-4787 or Daimler Trucks customer service at 1-800-547-0712.

ON JULY 6TH, 2018 ABOUT 11:30 AM, I EXPERIENCED A FRONT PASSENGER BLOWOUT ON MY 2016 CLASS A MOTORHOME. MY RV WAS EQUIPPED WITH GOODYEAR G670 TIRES 295/80R22.5 THAT CAME ON IT AT PURCHASE. TRAVELING EAST ON I-10 JUST BEFORE BAYTOWN, TEXAS. DRIVING AT 62 MPH ON A DRY SUNNY DAY THE TIRE BLEW. NEITHER MY WIFE NOR I WERE INJURED BUT, THE EXPERIENCE WILL LAST A LIFE TIME, THE TIRE SHOWED NO SIGNS OF OUTER DAMAGE AND I ONLY HAD JUST OVER 20K MILES ON THE TIRES. THE BLOWOUT CAUSE THE RV TO STEER HARD AND FAST RIGHT SENDING THE RV ACROSS ONE LANE AS I FOUGHT TO KEEP IT FROM STRAIGHT. IT LEFT THE FREEWAY HEADING ACROSS THE DITCH TO THE ON COMING TRAFFIC OF THE FRONTAGE ROAD. IN MY FIGHT TO MAINTAIN CONTROL, I WAS ABLE TO BRING IT TO A STOP DOWN THE CENTER OF A DITCH. ONCE THE RV WAS RECURRED, TIRE REMOVE I TOOK WHAT WAS LEFT TO THE GOODYEAR SERVICE CENTER IN BAYTOWN ON I-10 TO MAKE A CLAIM. NOT HEARING FROM THEM AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME, I VISITED THE CENTER AND MADE 2 CALLS OF INQUIRY. TODAY IS APRIL 1ST, 2019 AND HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM THE CENTER OR GOODYEAR. THE BLOWOUT DAMAGE COST OVER 60K DOLLARS.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (MOTOR HOME SPECIALIST LOCATED AT 5411 S INTERSTATE 35 W, ALVARADO, TX 76009) FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V077000 (SERVICE BRAKES, AIR) TO BE PERFORMED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE UNAWARE OF THE RECALL AND THAT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO HONOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE CURRENT AIR SUPPLY RESERVOIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE ISSUE AND STATED THAT THE RECALL NOTICE WAS AN ERROR AND THAT IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ISSUED BECAUSE IT WAS CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION AND NHTSA HAD TO APPROVE THE RECALL. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE SAME DEALER (MOTOR HOME SPECIALIST LOCATED AT 5411 S INTERSTATE 35 W, ALVARADO, TX 76009) UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V695000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING). THE CONTACT STATED THAT PRIOR TO THE RECALL REMEDY BEING PERFORMED, THE FRONT, MIDDLE, AND REAR REFLECTORS FLICKERED WHEN MAKING A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN OR SWITCHING LANES. AFTER THE RECALL REMEDY, THE REFLECTORS NO LONGER FLICKERED TO MAKE OTHER DRIVERS AWARE THAT THE DRIVER WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN OR SWITCHING LANES. THE CONTACT INQUIRED ABOUT THE REFLECTORS NOT FLICKERING WITH THE DEALER AND IT WAS INFORMED THAT BY LAW THE REFLECTORS WERE NOT REQUIRED TO FLICKER. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE RECALL REMEDY COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A CRASH. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO CALLED AT 800-517-9137 AND CONFIRMED THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE DEALER.
