2026 BMW X3 Recalls & Complaints

The rear cross traffic alert is not detecting vehicles, people or bicycles. I've had six close calls since purchasing the vehicle new last December. I took it to the Sarasota BMW dealer last week and was told it's functioning as it's supposed to. While it was being assessed, I met with a BMW Genius (tech support). We tested the rear cross traffic alert on another new BMW X3 and X5. The result was an unsatisfactory warning system in both vehicles. The BMW Genius said it's a common complaint.

We were driving on a feeder about to enter a freeway when we were in the middle of the lane, the car jerked hard to the left pulling the vehicle over almost colliding with a large curb. We jerked the wheel back to correct it, but the pull was forceful and unexpected, and could have easily made us jump the curb into a median.

On October 2, 2026, I was loading my dogs into the cargo area of my new 2026 BMW X3 x drive with the power liftgate fully open. The liftgate closed and struck me on the head. I was not touching any control. The gate was stationary before it descended, while I was lifting my 2nd dog into the vehicle. I went to urgent care immediately and required stitches. I also reported nausea. Ten days later, on October 12, I still had severe head pressure, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and brain fog, and I was diagnosed with a concussion at the emergency room. I was told to limit screen time and reduce my workload and have had to cancel work travel and meetings. I am seeing a concussion specialist. I believe the liftgate should have an obstruction-detection or pinch-protection system that stops or reverses the gate when it meets resistance. It did not prevent this injury. I am concerned that other owners, especially those loading children or pets, could be hurt in the same way. I have notified BMW of North America and my dealer and have asked that the vehicle not be repaired or reset before inspection.

While traveling from North Carolina to Oshkosh, WI on [XXX] to the 2026 EAA AirVenture annual event, with less than 800 miles on the odometer, our new BMW suffered a spontaneous perimeter stress fracture, accompanied with a loud "pop", to the top-center edge of the windshield. There was no traffic ahead in either lane. Ambient temperatures were in the mid-to-high 90's F. A rest area stop revealed that the fracture line was entirely smooth to a fingernail trace with no evidence of a foreign object strike of any kind. Overnight in Indiana, the fracture had migrated past the rearview mirror area, spreading several inches to the left. By [XXX] morning in Oshkosh, the fracture had spread across the driver's side, rendering the vehicle undrivable. I was using adaptive cruise control and hit a rainstorm and water pool; car hydroplaned and flipped over. Party behind me thought emergency braking systems kicked in and caused vehicle to hydroplane. Internet says there is issue with these staggered tire vehicles hydroplaning

Steering wheel was uncontrollable and locked when suddenly driver assist turned on automatically. Vehicle was driving on a regular road speed limit of 30-35 miles zone which caused a collision. The steering wheel kept steering the vehicle to the left lane, at one point tires seemed locked, vehicle spun, then hitting a retainer wall and turning 3 times then landing on the side with driver’s side down.

In two separate instances, I used the parking assist to back into a parking spot. Both times, the car moved forward but came so close to the car in front that I applied the brake. I felt that there would have been contact if I hadn’t. No reported damages in either instance. I stopped using the feature and will report to BMW service.

I am reporting a potential safety issue involving my **2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive**. I was parked on the right side of a parking lot. I moved the vehicle partially out of the parking space and slightly to the left to allow someone to enter the vehicle. I came to a stop and removed my foot from the brake while the vehicle was being held. I then turned toward the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle suddenly accelerated/moved forward across the parking aisle and struck two vehicles. The incident happened extremely quickly. I cannot state with certainty whether my foot inadvertently contacted the accelerator, and I do not want to speculate. I believe I attempted to brake. Of particular concern, I experienced **no apparent automatic collision-avoidance/emergency braking intervention before striking the vehicles**. Prior to this accident, I had expressed concern to a BMW advisor about the speed and acceleration of this vehicle while using its automated parking system. While the advisor was demonstrating the automated parking feature, I specifically commented that the vehicle was moving unusually fast and that I was uncomfortable with the amount of acceleration. I was told that this behavior was normal. On another occasion while using the automated parking/reverse function, I became sufficiently concerned about the vehicle's speed and acceleration that I applied the brake myself because I was afraid the vehicle could cause a collision. I had also previously raised concerns regarding inconsistent operation of the vehicle's Lane Departure Warning/assistance system. I have contacted BMW of North America and requested that BMW preserve and examine the vehicle's electronic and diagnostic data, including accelerator and brake inputs, Auto Hold status, automated parking system activity, Forward Collision Mitigation/Automatic Emergency Braking activity, sensor information, diagnostic/event logs and available crash/event data. The contact owns a 2026 BMW X3. The contact stated that while vehicle was stopped at an intersection with the engine running, the message “Auto Start Feature Off” was displayed, and the starter was cycling unexpectedly. There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was contacted but was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10.
