Defect description

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2011-2014 S 1000 RR/R/ HP4, R 1200 GS/GS Adventure/R/RT, K 1300 S, K 1600 GT/GTL/GTL Exclusive and 2014 R nine T motorcycles. The fuel pump, and auxiliary fuel pump in certain models, may crack and leak fuel during vehicle operation.

Safety consequence

A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, may result in a fire.

Manufacturer remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began March 17, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect description

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain accessory turn signals manufactured for 2006-2017 R1200GS, 2007-2008 and 2010-2017 R1200GS Adventure, 2017 F700GS and F800GS, 2013-2017 F800GT, 2015-2016 F800R, 2014-2017 F800GS Adventure, 2014-2016 S1000R, 2015-2017 R1200R, 2016-2017 R1200RS, and 2010-2017 S1000RR motorcycles. As designed, these accessory turn signals may be insufficiently visible to other drivers, and, as such, fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Safety consequence

If other drivers cannot easily see the turn signals, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Manufacturer remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the turn signals, free of charge. The recall began October 25, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect description

BMW is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 S 1000 RR motorcycles manufactured September 2011, through December 2012. Due to a manufacturing fault, the side-stand attachment bolts could start to loosen. The loosening of the side-stand bolts could cause the stand to separate from the frame of the motorcycle.

Safety consequence

A separation of the side-stand could cause the motorcycle to fall, causing a risk of injury.

Manufacturer remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will clean the sidestand mounting plate threads and replace the side-stand mounting plate bolts, free of charge. The recall began on January 29, 2013. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].

Defect description

BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 S1000RR MOTORCYCLES, MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 1, 2011, THROUGH APRIL 10, 2012. DUE TO A MANUFACTURING PROCESS ERROR, THE CONNECTING ROD BOLTS MAY BECOME LOOSE DURING HIGH ENGINE TEMPERATURES AND/OR HIGH ENGINE OPERATING SPEEDS WHICH COULD RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC ENGINE DAMAGE.

Safety consequence

IN THE EVENT OF ENGINE DAMAGE, ESCAPING OIL COULD CAUSE HANDLING ISSUES, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Manufacturer remedy

BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CONNECTING ROD BOLTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 8, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND SERVICES AT 1-800-525-7417.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THE SAME THING AS THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,200. *LN CONSUMER STATED ATTACHED ARE PHOTOS OF THE GAS LEAK ON A BMW 2012 S100RR. IT CONTINUOUSLY LEAKS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF GAS WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. THE GAS FLOWS ONTO THE ENGINE AND THEN ONTO THE GROUND. THE LEAK IS AT THE BOTTOM REAR OF THE GAS TANK AT THE FUEL PUMP/QUICK DISCONNECT. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS STATIONARY WHEN FAULT OCCURED. IT FAILED TO START FOLLOWING REFUELING. A 'VDS' CODE WAS DISPLAYED ON THE SCREEN. DEALER COULD NOT CONNECT TO THE ECU TO DETERMINE THE FAULT CODES. THE DEALER TESTED ALL THE SENSORS AND WIRING AND NO ISSUE. FINALLY THEY REPLACED THE ECU AND THEY WERE ABLE TO CONNECT TO THE ECU. THEY SAID THE FAULT IS IN THE ECU AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MOTORCYCLE HAS 4600 MILES ON IT. IF THE ECU FAULTED WHILE RIDING, A VDS (VEHICLE DROP SENSOR) CODE CAN POTENTIALLY CAUSE A CRASH AT HIGH SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN CORNERING ON MOTORCYCLES. BMW MOTORCYCLES OF USA FAILED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR A FAULTY ECU. THIS VDS CODE SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE ON THIS MOTORCYCLE AS REPORTED BY MANY PEOPLE ON FORUMS.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR READING INCORRECTLY WHICH CAUSED FAULT CODE IN BIKE WHICH THEN CAUSED BIKE TO SHUT OFF POWER. TOOK BIKE INTO DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. DEALER UNPLUGGED SENSOR AND RECONNECTED AND RESET THE ADAPTABILITY VALUES INSTEAD OF REPLACING SENSOR. ROAD BIKE APPROXIMATELY 500 MILES AND PROBLEM RECURRED. AT BOTH TIMES THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED THERE WAS SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER TO ENGINE WHICH ALMOST CAUSED ME TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT. HAVE LOST CONFIDENCE IN MOTORCYCLE AND AM AFRAID TO RIDE IT DUE TO UNPREDICTABLE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. ALSO HAD A PROBLEM WHICH BMW IS CALLING BULLETIN #61 002 13 [009] WHICH IS A WIRE IN THE WIRING HARNESS BEING CHAFFED AND GROUNDING OUT THE FRAME ON THE MOTORCYCLE. THIS ALSO CAUSED THE MOTORCYCLE TO SUDDENLY LOSE POWER WHICH ALSO ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE BEEN RIDING MOTORCYCLES FOR THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AND I BELIEVE THAT SOMEONE WITH LESS EXPERIENCE WOULD HAVE CRASHED DUE TO THESE PROBLEMS ON THIS VEHICLE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 BMW S1000RR MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE RIDING 55 MPH, THE CONNECTING ROD PUNCHED A HOLE THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK CAUSING OIL AND ANTIFREEZE TO LEAK ALL OVER THE CONTACT AND THE ROAD. IN ADDITION, THE OIL LEAKED ON THE REAR TIRES CAUSING THEM TO SEIZE AND THE CONTACT ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT MERGED THE VEHICLE OFF THE HIGHWAY WHERE IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE NECK AND BACK AS A RESULT OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED WHO STATED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT HIM WITHIN THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RETURN CALL FROM THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 800.
